2013 and early 2014 hasn't been kind to pop star Justin Bieber, the "Girlfriend" singer has found himself in a lot of hot water, upsetting the wrong people and getting into all sorts of trouble. However, as Bieber celebrates his twentieth birthday Saturday, let's put aside all the negative aspects and look into what made this YouTube sensation a superstar of today.

Bieber's success story is nothing short of a fairy tale. At the young age of 19, this Canadian singer has achieved more success than many people double his age. He has one of the largest fan following and recently been named the most followed personality is major social networking sites.

Early Life

Bieber was born March 1, 1994 in London, Ontario and was raised and brought up in Stratford, Ontario. He was born to a single mother (Patricia "Pattie" Mallette) who got pregnant when she was 18 years old. Though Bieber's mother and father Jeremy Jack Bieber never married they shared a very close friendship and contributed equally to Bieber's personal and professional life.

From a very young age, Bieber showed keen interest in music and musical instruments. By the time he was old enough to handle a guitar, he had already self taught himself to play many instruments including the piano, guitar, trumpet and drums. In 2007, when Bieber was 12 years old, he took part in a local singing competition and sang Ne-Yo's "So Sick." He was placed second. His mother put up his performance on YouTube and he soon became an Internet sensation. It wasn't long before American talent agent Scooter Braun discovered Bieber and immediately secured an audition with singer Usher Raymond. Usher was very impressed and immediately signed Bieber on with Raymond Braun Media Group (RBMG) and later to an Island Records recording contract by L.A. Reid.

The Start Of His Career

Reports have it that Justin Timberlake was also looking to sign on the young singer but lost out to Usher. In 2009, Bieber released his first single "One Time" while still recording his debut album. The song went platinum in the United States and Canada and Gold in New Zealand and Australia.  Later that year, he went on to release an extended play "My World." The album sold more than 137,000 copies in the first week of hitting stores.

He broke through Billboards top 10 in 2010 with his single "Baby." The song created heat waves across the globe. Later the same year he released his second album "My World 2.0." After the release of the album, he released the successful concert film named "Justin Bieber: Never Say Never" in 2011. The film earned $73 million at the box office. At the end of 2011, Bieber released his next album "Under The Mistletoe," which included Christmas classics and a duet with Mariah Carey. He also began recording for his third album "Believe." In March 2012, the first single of the album "Boyfriend" was released. It failed to debut as number one on Billboard as the song has been leaked in iTunes before the release, which limited its sales and downloads post release. However, it did manage to become Bieber's first single to top Canadian Hot 100. Later that year, Bieber released "Believe."

In the late 2012, his film "Justin Bieber's Believe" went into production and the singer announced that he would release a new song every Monday for 10 weeks as a lead-up to the film.

Bieber broke a million hearts when he started dating Selena Gomez in 2010. The couple made their relationship official in 2011 during the Vanity Fair Oscar Party. Reports in 2012 suggest that the two young superstars had called it quits, ending their 2 year relationship.

However, few months later reported suggested that the couple had reconciled only to break off in January 2013. The most recent news is that the two are looking to rekindle their love life and were seen hanging out together on New Year's Eve.
