French police have apprehended a 33-year-old man on suspicion of murdering his 35-year-old wife and their four children in their Meaux home, a quiet suburb near Paris.

The grim discovery was made on Christmas Day after concerned friends and family alerted authorities about the family's unresponsiveness, as per Reuters.

Local prosecutor Jean-Baptiste Bladier has disclosed distressing details surrounding the tragic incident. The victims, consisting of two boys and two girls aged nine months, four, seven, and 10 years old, were discovered in their family apartment situated at Square Adam-de-la-Halle. Shockingly, they were found with multiple stab wounds, adding a harrowing dimension to this heart-wrenching case.

The suspect, who had previously come under the radar of authorities due to past incidents of 'domestic violence,' was apprehended in Sevran during a police search conducted on Tuesday morning.

Geolocation data from the suspect's phone indicated that he left the family flat on Christmas Day around 8:07 p.m. Subsequently, he visited his father in Sevran and his grandmother in Garges-lès-Gonesse.

The bodies, bearing signs of violent attacks, were discovered at around 9 p.m. The two younger children, aged four and nine months, showed no apparent wounds, leading investigators to consider drowning or suffocation as possible causes of death.

The arrested man has a troubling history, having been investigated for domestic violence in 2019, including an incident where he attacked his wife with a knife. However, criminal proceedings were closed, citing his 'mental deficiency.' The suspect, who had spent time in a psychiatric hospital in 2017 and was on regular medication for mental problems, was already on the radar of authorities, according to Mail Daily
