Wong added that the number of Australian nationals in the Middle Eastern region shows that the war is also affecting Australia.Aside from their country, other nations are also affected by the Israel-Hamas war.

Penny Wong stated that this is why numerous nations, such as Australia and the U.S., are calling for humanitarian pauses. To at least help ease the conflict, Wong suggested a war resolution that could be best for Hamas and Israel.

The Australian Foreign Minister shared her suggestion via The Guardian. Wong said that since the war leads to widespread human suffering the need for a just and enduring peace is more crucial than retaliations.

"The future for both Israelis and Palestinians depends on this being realized," she added.

She explained that Israel has the right to defend its residents. But, just like Australia, it is also a democratic nation-state that is bound by the rule of law.

"That means Israel must observe international law and the rules of war," explained Wong.

With these facts, the Australian official said that when Israel is urged by its allied countries to protect civilians and have restaints, it has the responsibility to listen.

This is why Penny Wong believes that the best solution for the ongoing Israel-Hamas war is a two-state resolution, which involves Israel being a state alongside a Palestinian state.

Specifically, Wong provided the following steps needed to achieve this two-state war resolution:

  • The Hamas militant group should be dismantled and a reformed, legitimate Palestinian authority should be established.
  • Israel and Palestine should respect the rights of others to exist.
  • The Palestinian economy should receive serious international investments so it can build a future of its own.
  • Israel should stop establishing settlements in Palestine's territories.
