Voters arrive to cast their absentee ballots at the Madison Central Public Library on the last day of early voting on November 06, 2022 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. A record number of votes for a midterm election are expected to be cast across the United States.

AP News reported that The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research conducted a new survey to see how many Americans think AI can worsen the US election misinformation in 2024.

The University of Chicago Harris School of Public Policy also helped with the poll to make it more reliable. Based on their findings, 6 out of 10 US residents think AI tools will add to US election misinformation.

This is around 58% of the surveyees. These American voters think so because many experts already warned that artificial intelligence can be used to mass-produce persuasive messages, create realistic fake videos and images, and micro-target political audiences.

Yahoo Finance reported that when the surveyors asked Americans if 2024 presidential candidates should use AI tools, they said that it would be a bad thing if these election runners would use them to:

  • To answer voters' questions via chatbot (56%)
  • To tailor political ads to individual voters (62%)
  • To edit or touch up photos or videos for political ads (66%)
  • To create false or misleading media for political ads (83%)

Based on their answers, most Americans are concerned that using artificial intelligence can spread fake news and other false information about the upcoming US 2024 election.

Voters cast their ballots on Election Day November 04, 2008, at Centreville High School in Clifton, Virginia. Americans crowded polling stations Tuesday to vote in their historic election, with front-running Democrat Barack Obama seeking to become the first black US president and Republican rival John McCain battling for a comeback.

The best thing that American voters can do is to avoid believing new information about the US election they see on social media and other online platforms without researching these details first.

Here are some tips that Americans can follow to ensure that they will know the truth about US election information:

  • Read news provided by reliable sources and avoid those that are too suspicious.
  • Instead of relying on one source only, research the information and check other news about it.
  • Use fact-checking websites, such as Factcheck.org, PolitiFact, The Fact Checker, Snopes, etc.
  • Since AI can produce believable fake news, try finding signs that they were generated by artificial intelligence:
    • Check if the videos are too cinematic.
    •  Check for unusual physical characteristics of people in the videos and images, such as the positioning of their eyes, mouth, and hands.
    •  Check if the backgrounds used in the images and videos are unrealistic.
