A seven-year-old boy was struck and killed by a New York Police Department (NYPD) tow truck on Thursday morning (October 26).

Police said the truck was allegedly turning at the corner of Myrtle Avenue and North Portland Avenue in Fort Greene in Brooklyn.

NYPD Chief Jeffrey Maddrey said the boy was trying to cross the street alongside his mother when he was hit.

"Our heart goes out to the family of that young boy whose mother, the school, his teachers who were also on the scene, a very touch scene to be at this morning," he added.

The boy was pronounced dead at the scene.

The 54-year-old tow truck driver remained at the scene after she was flagged down by witnesses a block away from the scene. It was not immediately clear if she would face charges.

Investigations regarding the incident is ongoing.
