Ukrainian refugee Anna Shchekan works on her laptop at her company's shared office on March 3, 2023 in London, England. After arriving in London via Budapest and Berlin in May 2022, 22-year-old Shchekan sought refuge with a family in Kew district London.

Right now, many American employees can still enjoy WFH setups provided by their companies. But, some are not so lucky as their bosses are starting to require them to report to the office.

Because of this, some U.S. residents are finding other works that offer permanent WFH jobs. Meanwhile, other employees are trying to negotiate with their companies.

The question is, what is the thing that Americans are willing to sacrifice to have permanent home-based jobs? Here's what experts said.

Americans Willing Give Up $6000 Of Their Salaries To Have WFH Setup

According to USA Today's latest report, many Americans are willing to give up around $4,600 or $6,000 of their annual salaries just to have home-based jobs.

Specifically, statistics revealed that U.S. workers can give up 8% of their yearly income for a job that allows them to work within the vicinities of their homes.

This is based on American workers who have generated $57,200 and more in annual salaries. However, some of these employees said that they are still willing to let go of 8% of their salaries even if the work is hybrid (three days in the office and two days at home).

Meanwhile, others are okay with having office-based jobs as long as employers are willing to pay them tons of money.

"You'd have to pay me a lot to be in an office," said Emilie Bergstrom, a 28-year-old remote employee in Brooklyn.

"I'm not eating out as much during the week. I'm not buying coffee out. Being able to work out at home, I don't have a gym membership anymore," she added.

Aside from food, coffee, and gym membership, Emilie also shared that she can now save tons of money on airfare since she can travel anytime she wants.

Another thing that makes Emilie want to retain her WFH job is the savings she makes on business attire.

FlexJobs explained that WFH jobs really do help employees save money compared to traditional office work.

The remote-work website, which usually conducts surveys, said that an average individual can save up to $6,000 if they have a hybrid work setup.

Meanwhile, full WFH employees can save twice as much; around $12,000 yearly. This is because they can avoid expenses, such as the following:

  • They can save money on commuting expenses, such as gas, parking tickets, and public transportation fees.
  • They no longer need to have regular car maintenance.
  • They can avoid getting car insurance since they no longer drive to work.
  • They don't have to spend hundreds or thousands of dollars to buy office work clothes.
  • They no longer need to eat outside since they can make their own food at home.
  • These are just some of the perks of a WFH employee. You can click here to learn more.
