Police officials reported the arrest of a 17-year-old unidentified individual in relation to the Morgan State University shooting that resulted in the injury of five people.

Law enforcement personnel have arrested a 17-year-old in connection with the shooting at Morgan State University that resulted in five people getting injured on Oct. 3.

The Baltimore Police Department (BPD) did not reveal the name of the teenager because he is a minor but added that they are searching for a second suspect, 18-year-old Jovan Williams. The 17-year-old was taken into custody on Thursday and now faces charges of multiple counts of attempted murder.

Police noted that Williams remains at large and is believed to be armed and dangerous. Law enforcement officials were able to identify the two suspects through surveillance video that was obtained from the shooting.

In a statement, Commissioner Richard Worley said that the BPD had been working tirelessly on the investigation into the Morgan State University shooting. He said that the department was grateful for the many partners that assisted it in identifying and capturing one of the suspects in the case, as per CNN.

Worley added that they will not rest until the second suspect is also in police custody, noting that the arrest of the unidentified 17-year-old will not be able to erase the damage and trauma caused by the shooting. However, he said that he was hopeful it could bring some peace and justice to the victims, the Morgan community, and the city.

The incident occurred while a popular homecoming week event was letting out and it was one of the 543 mass shootings with at least four victims that have happened so far this year in the United States. It was also considered to be one of at least 17 shootings this year at a U.S. college or university, including in North Carolina, Oklahoma, and Michigan.

Several students and teachers at Morgan State University were ordered to shelter in place for hours as a SWAT team searched through the campus dormitories at the school where roughly 9,000 students were enrolled last fall.

Second Suspect Remains at Large

Officials noted that the five victims at Morgan State University were likely not the intended targets of the shooters. They said that they may have just been caught in the crossfire between the two suspects. Fortunately, the injured people have already been released from the hospital after being treated for their wounds, according to Fox News.

A few days after the shooting, the university announced a $22 million plan to build a wall around most of the northeast Baltimore campus and station security personnel at entrances and exits. This wall is planned to extend existing barriers by roughly 8,000 feet to encircle about 90% of the campus and will effectively "eliminate unfettered access," said university president David Wilson.

The shooting incident prompted Wilson to cancel classes for the week and it was the first time in the history of the school that all homecoming week events were either canceled or postponed. The order was in place until the perpetrators of the shooting were found and brought to justice.

The victims of the incident included one woman and four men, who ranged in age from 18 to 22. Police also noted that the shooting occurred following a dispute and involved several armed people, said the New York Times.
