Foreigners Among the Dead, Abducted, Missing in Israel-Hamas War

Israel pounded Hamas targets in Gaza on October 10 and said the bodies of 1,500 Islamist militants were found in southern towns recaptured by the army in grueling battles near the Palestinian enclave.

As of Monday (October 9), the combined civilian death toll brought by Hamas's massive coordinated attack across southern Israel over the weekend has climbed to nearly 1,600. Palestinian officials confirmed 687 of its citizens were killed, while Israeli authorities tallied over 900 of their residents dead.

Many of the first identified casualties were reportedly from the Supernova music festival just a few kilometers from the Gaza border. According to local emergency services, they have confirmed they have recovered some 260 bodies just on that party alone.

In the aftermath, Israeli officials and geopolitical analysts recognized the attack as Israel's version of 9/11 and Pearl Harbor combined.

However, dozens of foreigners were also killed, abducted, or still unaccounted for after being caught in the crossfire.

As of writing, this is what multiple countries have been saying about the status of their nationals and expatriates in Israel as reported by UPI, Al Jazeera, and the BBC.

Argentina

The Argentinian Embassy reported on Monday that seven of its citizens were killed and another 15 were still missing. The embassy has also received calls from 625 Argentinians to have them evacuated from Israel.

Austria

The Austrian foreign ministry stated on Tuesday (October 10) that three Austrian-Israeli dual citizens could be among those abducted. However, Vienna officials are still confirming the information.

Brazil

In a statement, the Brazilian foreign ministry reported that three Brazilians were still unaccounted for and that around 1,700 others, mostly tourists in Tel Aviv and Jerusalem, have "expressed interest" in being repatriated, with the Brazilian Air Force announcing on Monday it was in the process of organizing six evacuation flights with the first already landing in Rome en route to Israel.

Cambodia

Cambodian Prime Minister Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet confirmed a Cambodian student in Israel died during Hamas's attack.

Canada

Canadian Foreign Minister Melanie Joly told CTV News she received reports that a Canadian had been killed and three others were missing. Earlier, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced his country's solidarity with Israel by lighting the Peace Tower at Parliament Hill in blue and white, as well as lowering Canadian flags to half-mast in other key government offices in Ottawa.

Chile

Chile's foreign minister Alberto van Klaveren confirmed Loren Garcovich and her Spanish husband Ivan Illarramendi were missing and reportedly kidnapped by Hamas. He added that he had spoken with Garcovich's father, Danny, about the matter. Meanwhile, the Chilean Jewish community added that the couple lived in a kibbutz near the Gaza border and that their home had been destroyed. Van Klaveren's office also stated they were also in the process of organizing repatriation flights.

China

A Beijing-born Chinese-Israeli woman called Noa Argamani was among those taken from the Supernova festival, according to the Israeli Embassy in China. The embassy has published a video of what it claims to be the abduction, which has since been one of the most iconic so far in the conflict. The welfare and whereabouts of her boyfriend, who also attended the festival and has been abducted, remains unknown.

Colombia

Israeli Ambassador to Colombia Gali Dagan confirmed that Colombian couple Ivonne Rubio and Antonio Mesias Motano reportedly went missing when they attended the Supernova music festival. He prayed that both of them be found safe and well soon.

France

The French foreign ministry said it was mourning the death of a second citizen in Hamas's attack. They said in a separate statement that 14 French nationals were believed to be abducted by Hamas, including a 12-year-old child. The ministry also told reporters that it has nearly 62,000 French nationals registered at its consulate in Tel Aviv and a further 25,000 in Jerusalem.

Germany

The German foreign ministry said there were several German-Israeli dual nationals who were allegedly taken hostage but have not specified how many. Among the allegedly killed was 23-year-old Shani Louk, whose body was reportedly stripped naked in the back of a pickup truck when it was paraded back into the streets of Gaza.

Ireland

Irish officials said an Irish-Israeli woman. 22-year-old Kim Danti was confirmed missing. Irish broadcaster RTE reported that she was allegedly among those abducted in the Supernova festival. Prime Minister Leo Varadkar said the Irish Embassy in the country was dealing with the matter.

Italy

Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani said that an Israeli-Italian couple was missing and continued to be unresponsive to phone calls.

Mexico

Mexico's Foreign Affairs Secretary Alicia Barcena announced over the weekend that two Mexicans, a man and a woman, were believed to have been kidnapped by Hamas. She provided an update on Monday saying that a third Mexican initially thought to have been taken hostage by Hamas has been found safe and well. Barcena earlier said around 500 Mexicans have registered with Mexican authorities for evacuation should the situation worsen in Israel.

Nepal

The Nepalese foreign ministry said in a statement that it was in the process of repatriating the bodies of 10 Nepalese students who were killed by Hamas at Alumim Kibbutz in southern Israel. Officials back in Kathmandu have declared a national day of mourning and will fly the Nepalese flag at half-mast at all government offices and foreign missions. Nepal also said it was working on accounting for one more Nepalese person still missing in Israel, as well as working to repatriate those wishing to return home.

Panama

Panama's government said one of its nationals, Daryelis Denises Saez Batista, was missing, but provided no further details.

Paraguay

Two Paraguayan nationals who had been living in Israel are missing, Paraguay's government said, without giving details.

Peru

The Peruvian foreign ministry said four of its nationals have been reported missing since Saturday's (October 7) attack. They have also said seven Peruvians have left Israel aboard commercial flights with the assistance of the mission, with 73 more to follow them in the next two days.

Philippines

The Philippine Department of Foreign Affairs said seven Filipinos in Israel remained unaccounted for, according to a report by state news agency PNA. Officials in Manila added that the 22 other Filipino expatriates who earlier went missing were rescued by Israeli forces, with one of them taken to hospital for treatment. The department also said that 25 of the 137 Filipinos living in Gaza have indicated their intention to leave. It also issued a travel advisory recommending all travel between the Philippines and Israel be suspended indefinitely.

Russia

The Russian embassy in Tel Aviv stated that at least one Russian was killed and four were missing, as reported by Russian news agencies.

Tanzania

Tanzania's ambassador to Israel Alex Kallua told the French news agency AFP that two Tanzanian nationals were missing. He added that his mission had been in contact with approximately 350 Tanzanians around the country, most of them students.

Thailand

Thailand reported on Monday that 18 Thais in Israel were reportedly killed but were still waiting for verification. An additional nine others were injured and 11 others taken hostage, officials from Bangkok also stated. Thai deputy foreign minister Jakkapong Sangmanee added that about 3,000 Thais working in Israel - or around 10% of the 30,000 total expatriate Thai population in the country - have put in requests to be returned to Thailand.

Ukraine

Ukrainian foreign ministry spokesperson Oleg Nikolenko said Two Ukrainian women who had been living in Israel for years were killed.

UK

British MP Jackson Carlaw stated that a certain Bernard Cowan had been "murdered" by Hamas militants on Saturday, with Cowan's family confirming the death. The BBC reported that at least three other UK nationals have been killed and several others missing. Additionally, 20-year-old British-Israeli soldier Cpl. Nathaniel Young was killed in action while responding to Hamas's attacks.

US

US President Joe Biden was briefed late Monday that an additional two Americans were confirmed dead after a previous report putting the death toll at nine. This increased the total American deaths to 11.
