A former university dean was discovered shot in the head on a hiking trail close to the Vermont State University Castleton Campus where she'd worked.

The Vermont State Police are seeking public assistance in their ongoing investigation into the tragic murder of Honoree Fleming, a 77-year-old retired university official, as per to CNN News.

Honoree Fleming was discovered dead around 4:30 p.m. on October 5, having accessed the 20-mile mixed-use trail from the VSU Castleton pavilion area just half an hour earlier. Her apparel consisted of a shirt with white and blue stripes, black trousers, and black sneakers at the time.

The state medical examiner's postmortem examination confirmed that her death was a homicide resulting from a headshot wound.

Honoree Fleming made significant contributions to education, serving as a former dean of education at Virginia State University and working at prestigious institutions, including Trinity College, Middlebury College, and the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai.

She was married to Pulitzer Prize-winning author Ron Powers, who wrote a poignant Facebook post about his profound loss, according to MSN.
