The Duke of Sussex was spotted inside Windsor Castle on September 8, 2023, to remember his late grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II, on her first death anniversary, which also marked the first anniversary of his father’s accession as King Charles III.

Prince Harry was spotted Friday (September 8) leaving St. George's Chapel inside Windsor Castle to commemorate his late grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II, who was buried there a year on since she died.

The Duke of Sussex, known for leaving the family and accusing his father and brother, Prince William, of racism, among other things, was in the UK to attend a charity awards ceremony in London this week while his father, King Charles III, was in Balmoral Castle in Scotland to commemorate Elizabeth's death and his accession at a prayer service at nearby Crathie Kirk.

Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex, was not accompanying Harry on his UK trip.

Meanwhile, Harry's elder brother and Prince of Wales, William, was in his namesake principality, where he and his wife Catherine commemorated Elizabeth's first death anniversary at a service in St. David's Cathedral in Pembrokeshire, the BBC reported.

The Prince and Princess of Wales, also posted several photos of the late queen on Instagram, with the caption: "We all miss you."

King Charles Remembers Mother's Life of Service

There were no formal events to commemorate Elizabeth's first death anniversary, but gun salutes were fired around the country.

In an earlier statement, Charles marked the death of his mother by recalling "her long life" and "devoted service" to the UK, the Commonwealth, and beyond.

"I am deeply grateful...for the love and support that has been shown to my wife [Queen Camilla] and myself during this year as we do our utmost to be of service to you all," the king's statement read.

Elizabeth died on September 8, 2022, at Balmoral. She was 96. Her death and subsequent funeral were speculated as one of the most pivotal points in British, Commonwealth, and world history in the 21st century.

Commoners Also Commemorate Elizabeth's Life

Despite several calls to topple the monarchy in favor of a republic, many people in the UK still remember Queen Elizabeth's legacy and how Charles is doing his best to maintain the image of service she has instilled in the royal family and in the wider society.

British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said the gratitude of the people to the late queen and her life of service "only continues to grow," and that her "wisdom," "incredible warmth and grace," and "sharp wit" would be remembered.

"People across the UK - whether they had the good fortune to meet Her late Majesty or not - will be reflecting today on what she meant to them and the example she set for us all," he added

Meanwhile, opposition Labour Party leader Sir Keir Starmer reflected on the long line of mourners who wanted to see Elizabeth's coffin during the lying-in-state in the days leading up to her funeral.

"It was a relationship built from her understanding that service of this great nation is the thread that unites sovereign and subject," he said. "So, as we reflect on her legacy again today, let us embrace that spirit of public service as our guide towards a better future."
