5 Killed in DC Shootings Over Labor Day Weekend

Five people were killed in four separate shooting incidents around Washington DC Friday (September 1), one of many violent losses of life across the county over the Labor Day weekend.

The first shooting happened around 13:45 local time (17:00 UTC) when police alleged they responded to a shooting in the 5100 block of Astor Place SE. Officers found a certain 32-year-old named Mannin Quarles suffering gunshot wounds but was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police are still looking for two suspects in connection to the incident. The first is a Black man about 5' 7" high (170 cm) who was last seen wearing a red shirt, blue jean shorts, and black and red Nike shoes. The second person is a heavyset woman who was last seen wearing a tan shirt and tan bottoms.

Aside from the US capital, several cities also reported fatal shooting incidents over the Labor Day weekend, such as Chicago, Atlanta, Baltimore, and Kansas City.

Other DC Shootings

DC Police also responded to a string of other shooting incidents, such as the one in the 100 block of Farragut Street NW, where they found 43-year-old Richard Ruffin III dead at the scene. No suspects or persons of interest were identified.

Two teenagers and a girl were also shot in the 1300 block of Seventh Street NW. All three were taken to hospital, but both teenagers, Mikeya Ferguson, 19, of Southeast; and Cle'shai Perry, 18, of Northwest, died from their injuries. The girl remains in a critical but stable condition.

A 15-year-old named Zyion Turner was the fifth person shot dead on that night when police arrived at the scene early Saturday morning (September 2) of an incident in the 4200 block of Fourth Street SE. No suspects or persons of interest were also identified.

Turner was killed on the first night of DC's juvenile curfew hours in parts of the city, running from midnight to 06:00 local time. It was unclear whether or not Turner was inside the residence at the time of his death.
