Britain is facing multiple problems stemming from an increase in the elderly proportion of its population, including increasing healthcare costs, strains on its social security system, a shortage of senior care workers, and challenges to the employment market.

If you're a TikTok user, then you might (or have) come across content about the old age filter.

You might see other TikTokers using the old age filter to show what they look like or that their future old selves look like their beloved grandparents.

Aside from helping users create wholesome content, the old-age filter also reveals something about Americans.

According to The Washington Post's latest report, Americans show their youth obsession and fears of aging each time they use the TikTok filter.

Numerous experts claimed that among the people across the globe who are afraid of aging, Americans fear it the most.

"Our core values are rooted in progressive concepts like constantly moving forward, looking ahead to the future, and the unlimited possibilities of the future," explained Larry Samuels, a cultural historian.

The author added that in today's society, aging is seen by some individuals as a failure.

He added that since Americans, as well as other people around the globe, are afraid of aging, age-related filters always do well on TikTok and other social media platforms.

When others are told that they fear something, they tend to take it in a negative way. However, being afraid of aging is not really a bad thing. In fact, Brandeis University Prof. Sarah Lamb said that when people fear something, they become more drawn to it.

She added that this fear will push people to prepare for their future old selves.

If they know that they will not like their appearance in the coming years, they will make efforts to take care of their bodies.

What To Do If You Lose Confidence

HuffPost reported that seeing your old self could make you lose your confidence and you're not alone. If ever this happens to you after using the TikTok aging filter, do these:

  • Try monitoring your "negative self-talk."
  • Find something you like about your old self.
  • Instead of following Kim Kardashian or other younger influencers, try following older online celebrities.

Remember, not everyone will be lucky enough to get older and see the world longer. So, try considering aging as a gift.
