Elon Musk announced the formation of a new artificial intelligence-focused company after months of hinting intentions to create a competitor to ChatGPT.

Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, announced he will launch and lead a new artificial intelligence company called xAI.

The AI company's team consists of 12 members, including Musk. During Musk's discussion about AI with Reps. Ro Khanna (D-Calif.) and Mike Gallagher (R-Wis.) on Twitter Spaces on Wednesday at 7 p.m. EDT, people can meet the team behind the AI company and pose questions, according to the company's website.

Both Khanna and Gallagher have been vocal about artificial intelligence's potential benefits and perils. The discussion comes amid growing interest in emergent technologies among legislators.

Tuesday marked the first-ever classified briefing for senators on artificial intelligence. Khanna, whose district encompasses Silicon Valley, stated in an April interview with Semafor that AI must be subject to appropriate antitrust regulation without undermining its positive attributes.

"The goal of xAI is to understand the true nature of the universe," the company said through its website.

Meanwhile, Elon Musk tweeted, "Announcing formation of @xAI to understand reality."

Since taking over Twitter, Musk's propagation of right-wing voices and conspiracies has made him an increasingly divisive figure on the left. He also stated that he is willing to engage with Musk, who has become an increasingly divisive figure on the left.
While Musk has officially entered the AI sweepstakes, he has also been a prominent voice of caution regarding the potential impact of the technology on humanity.

Per CBS News, Musk was an early supporter of OpenAI, the company that created ChatGPT, but he subsequently criticized the company for implementing safeguards to prevent the chatbot from disseminating biased or sexist responses.

In December, Musk responded to a Twitter user who asked OpenAI's CEO if it was possible to "turn off the woke settings" on ChatGPT by tweeting, "The peril of training AI to be woke - that is, to deceive - is lethal."

In an April interview with former Fox News anchor Tucker Carlson, Musk hinted at his new AI venture. TruthGPT is a "maximum truth-seeking AI" that "cares about understanding the universe," he said.

Musk's Doubt on Artificial Intelligence

Musk's announcement of the new company comes months after he warned in an interview that artificial intelligence could cause "civilization destruction" and joined other tech executives in calling for a halt to an "out of control" AI race.

Few additional details on the company's mission were immediately accessible, but its website indicates it is actively recruiting employees. Currently, it appears that all twelve staff members on the website are male.

Musk's announcement of his latest venture comes at a difficult time for him. Twitter, which he purchased for $44 billion in October, now confronts an uncertain future due to the introduction of Threads, a competing app by Meta.

In less than a week, registrations for Meta's app surpassed 100 million. Meanwhile, there were multiple reports of declining Twitter usage.

Musk has alienated some Twitter users and advertisers for months by reducing staff, forcing through controversial policy changes, and making a number of incendiary statements. In addition to Twitter, Musk is the founder and CEO of Tesla, SpaceX, Neuralink, and The Boring Company.
