The Republican Party's official Twitter account made a blunder on Independence Day when they tweeted a photo of the wrong flag.

The tweet, which has since been deleted, featured a flag that looked similar to the American flag but with a few key differences.

A general view taken on September 27, 2017 shows the Liberian Flag on the facade of the Samuel Kanyon Doe Sports Complex in Monrovia, Liberia. - The stadium was built in 1986 and was a refuge for residents during the country's second civil war.

As per Newsweek, the GOP's Twitter account, which goes by the @GOP username, found itself amid an embarrassing mix-up when it mistakenly tweeted an incorrect US flag. Instead of the stars and stripes that symbolize American pride, the party's tweet displayed the flag of Liberia. The internet wasted no time in seizing the opportunity to unleash a storm of ridicule and bemusement.

The now-deleted tweet comes with a caption: "247 years ago, our forefathers told Ol' King George to get lost! Happy Independence Day from the GOP!" However, the post featured two Liberian flags rather than the actual United States (US) flag.

After the embarrassing mishap, the Republican party posted another tweet featuring the correct US flag in celebration of Independence Day. The subsequent post says, "Thank you to all the men and women in uniform who continue to defend our freedom at home and abroad."

To be fair, Newsweek points out that the US flag and the Liberia flag rocks striking resemblances. Notably, the Liberian flag has 11 stripes, while the US flag has 13 stripes. However, the flag of the West African nation has a single star in the blue canton, while the US flag has 50 stars. On top of that, its stripes are red and white, while the latter's flag sports red and white stripes alternating with blue.

Twitter Users React to GOP's Fourth of July Tweet

According to Jezebel, the Republican party quickly deleted the tweet. But despite that, the internet, ever vigilant, wasted no time capturing screenshots and immortalizing the Republican Party's gaffe. Social media users wondered how a political party could mix up their nation's flag.

Memes and witty remarks spread like wildfire, with many pointing out the irony of a patriotic mistake made in time for the Fourth of July. Raw Story reports that Communications strategist Zack Brown tweets, "From your dear friends at the Republican National Committee, Happy Independence Day, Liberia!"

Another Twitter user, Proud Wokester, posts, "What idiot runs the @GOP page? @thectizeNYgoes to reiterate that "They selected the Liberia flag, not the US flag."
