At least 52 people were killed when a truck collided with multiple other vehicles and market vendors in western Kenya.

Authorities have confirmed that one of the deadliest crashes in recent years has occurred in Kenya, resulting in the loss of 52 lives.

The tragic incident involved a truck colliding with multiple vehicles and pedestrians at a busy road junction. Rescuers are working to clear the wreckage caused by the truck, which was transporting a shipping container and had veered out of control.

The collision caused devastation as the truck plowed into other vehicles, including private cars, minibusses, and motorcycle taxis, as well as market stalls. The search for potential victims still trapped beneath the wreckage is ongoing, as per Daily Mail.

While the truck driver's death has been reported by Citizen TV, it has yet to be independently confirmed. Disturbing footage from the scene revealed the extent of the damage, with twisted metal, torn-off doors, and crushed motorbikes scattered across the area.

As a result of the accident, many Kenyan leaders, including President William Ruto, expressed their condolences. The incident has also prompted discussions about road safety, with suggestions for safety measures such as speed bumps and proper rest breaks for long-distance truck drivers.

Road accidents remain a significant issue in Kenya, with statistics indicating that thousands of people were involved in accidents last year, resulting in a substantial number of fatalities. The nation mourns the loss of those affected by this tragedy, and efforts are underway to support the victims' families and prevent similar catastrophes.

Kenyan Government Plans to Relocate Street Vendors

According to a report by Kenyan station Citizen TV, it has been stated that the driver of the vehicle involved in the crash has died. However, independent confirmation of this information is still pending. Disturbing footage emerged on Friday, revealing the extensive wreckage as rescue workers labored in the dark and heavy rain, accompanied by the piercing sirens of ambulances.

The following day, a large crowd gathered at the crash site, where the overturned container remained lodged in a ditch. Debris, including car seats, piles of fruit, a damaged axle, and a solitary black boot, was scattered over a wide area.

An eyewitness named Joel Rotich described the incident as occurring suddenly, leaving many with no time to escape. According to Irish Times, chaos ensued as people screamed and scattered in the accident's aftermath.

In response to the tragedy, Kenyan government official Murkomen announced plans to relocate street traders from roadside areas to designated markets to prevent similar catastrophes in the future. He also advocated for enhanced safety measures at accident-prone sites, as well as the enforcement of proper rest breaks and refresher courses for long-distance truck drivers.

Statistics provided by Kenya's national transport and safety authority indicate that a staggering 21,760 individuals were involved in road accidents last year, resulting in 4,690 fatalities.

Highlighting a broader concern, the World Health Organization reported in September of the previous year that Africa possesses the highest rate of road traffic fatalities globally, with over 800 individuals losing their lives every day due to such incidents.
