Four young children who were missing for over a month after a plane crash in the Colombian Amazon have been found alive and well, according to a report by Reuters. The survivors are siblings, and the youngest is a 12-month-old infant. The other kids are aged four, nine, and 13.

Five weeks have passed since the Cessna 206 plane they were riding grappled with an engine failure, triggering a mayday alert on May 1.

The four children, three girls, and one boy, were miraculously the only survivors of the tragic plane crash. The unfortunate accident killed three other adults in the aircraft, which includes the kid's mother, Magdalena Macutuy, and its pilot Hernando Murcia Morales. CNN reports that the Yarupari indigenous leader Herman Mendoze Hernandez is also one of the casualties.

The grandfather of the survivors says that he is "very happy" that his grandchildren have been found.

President Gustavo Petro says, "The most important thing now is what the doctors say, they have been lost for 40 days, their health condition must have been stressed." He also adds that the mental state of four children who wandered in the jungle for over a month needs attention.

The Colombian President says he will try to speak with the kids tomorrow. He assured that the utmost priority, for now, is their medical treatment, noting that they might travel to Villavicencio or Bogota.

Petro describes the reappearance of the plane crash survivors as "a remarkable testament of survival."

Search for the Missing Kids

Following the disappearance of the young children after the crash, a massive rescue and search operation kicked off. More than a hundred Colombian special forces combed the dense Amazon jungle with the help of roughly 70 indigenous scouts.

As the exhaustive search went on, they found clues that the children had survived the tragic crash. The military-led search saw footprints, a dirty diaper, and a bottle deep within the Amazon forest. A fruit seemingly have eaten also showed up. These clues gave hope that the children are alive and well despite the plane crash. However, as weeks passed by, some lost hope. Yet after several weeks, the kids unbelievably turned out to be alive and well.

As of writing, it is still unclear how the children survived wandering the Amazon jungle for over a month. However, family members say that one of the youngsters has experience in the forest, the Independent UK reports.
