The Philippine Long Distance Telephone Company (PLDT) announced Monday that its broadband internet service is affected by an issue with a submarine cable provider.

Internet users from the Philippines noticed the issue at around 16:00 Philippine time (08:00 UTC).

According to local media, one of the telco's submarine cable partners confirmed a loss in some of its internet bandwidth capacity, which caused slower internet browsing.

"We are now working with our partners to provide alternate capacity that would restore the browsing experience in the next few hours," the company said in a statement.

The company also stated they are trying to restore normal browsing experience for customers, specifically accessing Google services like Gmail and YouTube, which was the main issue customers complained about.

According to the Philippine Star, PLDT has invested $75 million to expand its international capacity by laying down a 9,400km underwater cable traversing East and Southeast Asia.

This is a developing story.
