Sadly, at least one man in his 40s or 50s died, and at least nine more were injured when a massive fire swept through an eight-story residential building in Rome's Colli Aniene area Friday.

The injured were taken to hospital for treatment.

Italian officials added that six firefighter teams were involved in putting the fire under control after it started at about 14:00 Roman time (12:00 UTC). Firefighters are now inspecting the building to look for more people who might have been trapped inside.

A local councilor was quoted by the Italian newspaper La Repubblica saying the building was no longer stable, resulting in more than 100 residents becoming homeless.

The cause of the fire remains unknown, but investigators speculated the fire broke out on the scaffolding outside the building.

This is a developing story.
