Indian media reported at least 100 people were injured after two trains collided in India's Odisha state.

The collision involved a passenger train called the Coromandel Express, which derailed and fell onto the opposite track, resulting in a head-on collision with a goods train.

According to local authorities, nearly 50 ambulances were sent to the scene to transport the injured to Balasore Hospital.

There are fears a number of people trapped in the collision have died.

Indian prime minister Narendra Modi tweeted he was "distressed" over the incident.

"In this hour of grief, my thoughts are with the bereaved families," he said. "May the injured recover soon."

Modi added he has spoken with Indian railway minister Ashwini Vaishnaw regarding the accident and assured rescue operations are underway to provide assistance to those affected as much as possible.

This is a developing story.
