Carmelo Anthony announced his retirement from professional basketball on Monday, May 22.

The NBA legend thanked and bid farewell to the sport that gave him purpose and pride in a touching video posted on social media. "Time has come for me to say goodbye," Melo said.

The Denver Nuggets, New York Knicks, Oklahoma City Thunder, Houston Rockets, Portland Trail Blazers, and Los Angeles Lakers are just a few of the teams Anthony played for throughout his astounding 19 seasons in the NBA, according to The Score.

During the 2021-22 NBA season, Carmelo Anthony played 69 games with the Lakers, mostly as a bench player.

Carmelo Anthony's retirement was announced a week before his 39th birthday. The basketball great was a 10-time All-Star throughout his successful career, and while playing for many teams, he amassed 28,289 points, per ESPN. In 2021, Carmelo Anthony was named among the 75 Greatest NBA players.

After a successful undergraduate career at Syracuse University, where he led the basketball team to its first-ever NCAA title during his freshman season, his adventure started when the Denver Nuggets chose him as the third overall choice in the 2003 NBA Draft.

Anthony's road to prominence began in a high-crime area in Baltimore, Maryland. His mother moved him to a school in western Virginia to provide him with a better learning environment. Melo's outstanding performance in college basketball garnered him honors like the NCAA Final Four Most Outstanding Player title, in part due to his incredible 33-point effort in the semifinal game. He was also recognized as the Big East Conference Freshman of the Year, further establishing his image as an emerging basketball talent in 2002-2003.

Carmelo Anthony made contributions outside of the NBA, representing the United States in international basketball competitions. He was named to the 2006 FIBA World Championship All-Tournament Team and named 2016 USA Basketball Co-Male Athlete of the Year.

Melo also won gold medals in the 2016 Olympic Games, 2012 Olympic Games, 2008 Olympic Games, and the 2007 FIBA Americas Championship, demonstrating his unquestionable brilliance on the international stage, according to USA Basketball.
