On the eve of the first anniversary of the invasion, the UN passed a nonbinding resolution calling on Russia to end hostilities in Ukraine and remove its soldiers, clearly stating that Moscow's aggression must cease.

Six nations sided with Russia during Thursday's vote at the United Nations General Assembly, in which 141 countries voted to cease hostilities in Ukraine and demand that Moscow withdraw its soldiers.

Belarus, North Korea, Syria, Eritrea, Mali, and Nicaragua opposed the proclamation alongside Russia. While the resolution does not compel Russia to withdraw from Ukraine, it represents a worldwide condemnation of Moscow's conduct.

UN Approves Resolution For Russia to Leave Ukraine

The vote represents a slight rise from the four countries that opposed a resolution condemning Russia's takeover of Ukrainian territory in October. Mali and Eritrea both abstained from voting at the time. Russia has forged solid military connections with the six nations that oppose the resolution. Belarus attempted amendments that would have substantially weakened the resolution, but they were rejected.

Fox News reported that South Africa, China, and India were among the nations that abstained from Thursday's vote. The Ukrainian Foreign Minister, Dmytro Kuleba, viewed the 141-7 vote as a win, seeing it as evidence of international support for his country.

Friday will mark one year since the invasion of Ukraine by Russian armed forces. The battle has resulted in the deaths of tens of thousands on both sides, the destruction of entire Ukrainian cities, and increased global food and fuel prices.

The vote was somewhat below the highest total for the five previous resolutions passed by the 191-member international body since February 24, 2022, when Russia launched soldiers and tanks into its smaller neighbor. According to ABC News, 143 nations supported this in an October resolution condemning Russia's unlawful annexations.

During two days of debate, foreign ministers and diplomats from more than seventy-five countries addressed the assembly. Many urged support for the resolution that upholds Ukraine's territorial integrity, a fundamental principle of the UN Charter that all countries must adhere to join the international organization.

Russia-Ukraine War Update

The conflict has resulted in the deaths of thousands and the destruction of entire Ukrainian cities, and its effects have been felt globally in the form of increased food and fuel prices and inflation.

The deputy ambassador of Venezuela addressed the council on behalf of 16 nations that voted against or abstained on nearly all five previous resolutions regarding Ukraine: Belarus, Bolivia, Cambodia, China, Cuba, Eritrea, Equatorial Guinea, Iran, Laos, Mali, Nicaragua, North Korea, St. Vincent, Syria, Venezuela, and Zimbabwe.

While other nations focused on Russia's actions, Venezuelan Deputy Ambassador Joaqun Pérez Ayestarán stated on Wednesday that all nations "must strictly comply with the United Nations Charter."

His statement was a thinly veiled jab at an international order long dominated by the US and Europe and what some have called violations of the charter. Ayestarán stated that his organization was opposed to what he termed divisive actions in the United Nations General Assembly and favor of "a spirit of compromise."

Throughout the Cold War, India was dependent on the Soviet Union, and it has refrained from voting many times on UN Security Council resolutions urging that Russia halt its invasion.

Per Republic World, less-powerful nations, notably those in Africa, have also been entangled in the diplomatic dispute. Russia is Africa's leading arms supplier, and Odongo observed that most of his country's military equipment is manufactured in Russia.
