It's now a race against time for rescuers searching for survivors in the rubble left by the devastating Turkey-Syria earthquake.

Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan on Tuesday proclaimed a state of emergency in 10 districts hit by the devastating Turkey-Syria earthquake that killed over 5,100 people in the two nations.

There was a "race against time" as rescuers battled dangerous circumstances to extract survivors from the wreckage of destroyed buildings a day after the Turkey-Syria earthquake, according to Reuters.

The magnitude of the accident made it probable that the Turkey-Syria earthquake death toll would grow sharply. One UN source believes hundreds of children may have died in the disaster.

The magnitude 7.8 earthquake, the worst in Turkey since 1999, and another one an hour later destroyed hundreds of structures, destroyed hospitals and schools, and left tens of thousands of individuals wounded or homeless in many Turkish and Syrian towns.
