Belgium Court Denies Kaili's Request

Eva Kaili, 44, is one of four accused persons held in custody earlier in the month in Brussels.

She has sustained her innocence and sought that the custody case confers her discharge under electronic surveillance, which was rejected, reported Euractiv.

Her counsel, Andre Risopoulos, told AFP that she will not contest the decision, indicating that she'll be detained for at least another month while the investigation is still underway.

Risopoulos told the press before the court's decision that his client cooperates very actively with the Belgian investigation. Even if it was okay to wear an electronic tracker while the probe is going on, she should be allowed liberty, noted Wion News.

Kaili, a former news anchor, was kicked out as the parliamentary vice president according to police raids as part of a greater graft and corruption case.

The accused Qatari officials have denied the Gulf nation's involvement in the EU wrongdoings.

Michalis Dimitrakopoulos, also one of Kaili's lawyers, told journalists last Wednesday that she did feel "extremely disturbed" and deceived by her companion and co-accused Francesco Giorgi.

Dimitrakopoulos says that his client will not be going anywhere and could not get rid of any evidence. Last December 9, the Belgian police executed raids in several locations that yielded alleged bribe money. Whose source is the Qatar government

After the raids had gathered evidence that pointed to the Greek EU official, three others linked to the case are her partner Giorgio, the chief of an NGO that was involved in dealing with money.

Another one included an ex-MEP becoming a lobbyist, and the majority are Italian who are involved. They were all arrested by Brussels police, citing Yahoo News.

These four are accused of conducting the criminal activity and corrupt practices, with money laundering as well. A Belgian judge, who authored the order of apprehending and taking the EU official, said she was caught in the act. This means immunity was not an option at all.

Distinct inquests had already officially started in Italy and Greece. Then on Thursday, Greek judicial references said they would have acquired a 7,000-square-meter (1.7-acre) plot of land purchased by Kaili and Giorgi on Paros, there in the Cyclades islands, and frozen a checking account kept by the pair.

In her defense, the MEP said that no Qatari money was ever taken to affect decisions by lobbying in the EU parliament.

Qatar has refused the bribery claims and asserted that proceeding to be associated with the controversy might very well harm ties with the bloc. As a result, the natural gas supplies supplied may impact the European Union.

The Greek EU official's court case was done separately from the other, and she appeared in a Belgian court last December 14. This date is when the court ordered Giorgi, ex-MEP, and Pier Antonio Panzeri, to stay in jail. NGO head Niccolo Figa-Talamanca's appeal was refused the request. Since a Belgium Court rejected the request of EU Eva Kaili, which has opened the parliament to much criticism.
