When asked, the deceased's wife,Venus Colly More-Bey-Pena Lighty, told an outlet there was no link between the father's death and their son.

Lighty remarked that she did not know the situation and added that Pena Sr. was a random event victim. She added that the father maintained contact with his son, paying for the lawyers, being present at his hearing, and calling. He was a dedicated father to all his five kids, she added. Lighty says the deceased was a good person and won't hurt anyone as he liked kids.

One neighbor said that Pena Sr. was in the ex-wife' house last Monday, giving a message from his son.

Abdul, a clerk at the Green Apple Deli, said the deceased went there regularly as one of their loyal customers. He said the Pena Sr. was a nice man and kept to himself, not bothering anyone. It was a case of bad timing that led to something terrible.
