According to an archeologist, the legendary Cleopatra's tomb is at the end of a secret tunnel about 4,800 feet long that lies underneath an ancient Egyptian city. It was identified as a Greco-Roman tunnel built 2,000 years ago under the ancient Egyptian city called Taporis Magna.

Will Secret Tunnel Finally Lead to Cleopatra's Tomb? 

Situated on the north coast of Egypt inside a rock-cut channel about 4,281 feet discovered by an Egyptian Dominican archaeological mission, reported Mirror UK.

The Pharaoh Ptolemy II Philadelphus built Taposiris Magna between 280 and 270 BC in the Alexandria Governorate in Egypt. The city used to be a cultural and religious center when Alexander the Great made Egypt his dominion in 332 BC; Alexandria was established then.

According to Martinez, there is a slight 1% chance that the tomb of Egypt's last Queen and Roman soldier Mark Anthony is in the secret tunnel. She added that it could be the most important find of the 21st century, noted Heritage Key.

She speculated the suicide of Mark Anthony caused Cleopatra to consider a burial with him. Archeologists called the secret tunnel a probable key to an Egyptian puzzle, the legendary Cleopatra's tomb.

Martinez told National Geographic that Cleopatra made a deal with Octavian to keep her lover's body in Egypt. She wanted to copy the legend of Isis and Osiris. She added that the real meaning of the Osiris cult is that immortality is given to its believers. She firmly believed after their deaths that the gods would allow the two to ascend to another life after death, giving eternal life to the couple.

The Egyptian Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities commented that the newly-discovered passageway was 6.5 feet high and extended 43 feet underground.

Aside from the tunnel discovery, the group of scientists headed by Martinez for the last 14 years was able to come across two heads from Ptolemaic-era alabaster statues close to the temple. The ministry said one was a representation of the Sphinx.

She pointed out the amazing tunnel engineering, which had a similar design elsewhere. The architectural style is identical to Greece's Yubilinus tunnel project but bigger. According to her, one point is that a well-hidden tunnel had a part under the Mediterranean Sea.

Archeologists Discover More Treasures in the Tunnel

Artifacts from the excavation had yielded a few ceramic jars and pots, with a block in a rectangle shape made of limestone that was uncovered under mud and sediments.

The Egyptian coast had 23 quakes between 320 AD and 1303 AD, which may have caused a part of the Temple of Taposiris Magna to sink and collapse. One report says the mission is trying to find a relic from the temple's foundation, thought to be there by existing evidence.

Based on the Egyptian Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities remarked on the discovery of artifacts in the temple, like coins with images of Cleopatra and Alexander the Great. It includes heads, statues of Isis, and many figurines.

Tunnels were discovered from King Marriot Lake to the Med, and 16 tombs were used in the Greek and Roman eras. Plus, mummies in getting treated from the same period were found too. Finding the legendary Cleopatra's tomb via a secret tunnel said an archeologist could be the most significant discovery of the century.
