Two large avalanches in Colorado have left one snowmobile operator dead and a skier missing, according to local reports.

The snowmobiler died on Monday, after a mountain of snow slammed into the ground near Kebler Pass, just outside of Crested Butte.

Another person was reportedly buried beneath the heavy white powder of the avalanche, but was able to break out and seek help.

But one skier is still missing, after another avalanche hit the backcountry near Keystone Ski Resort the same day. Another person skiing at the time got trapped in the slide, but managed to escape, the Associated Press reported.

The missing skier has been described as a man in his 40s. Officials told AP their plans to send out a rescue crew once the snow cleared and the area was deemed safe enough to investigate.

The Associated Press stated that a massive bout of snowfall has brought hordes of eager snowboarders and skiers to Colorado, but has also upped the risk of a serious avalanche in the backcountry.

According to the coroner in Gunnison County, Monday's incident marked the ninth avalanche death in the United States this year.
