Google will soon have a new competitor for its popular smart eyewear. Samsung is readying its version of wearable computer tech, the Galaxy Glass, expected to hit the market later in September.

Soon other tech companies will be joining Google with their version of the Glass. Samsung is ready to challenge the internet giant by introducing its own smart specs called "Galaxy Glass" at the IFA fair in Berlin this September, The Korea Times reports.

Smartwatches emerged as key products at this year's U.S. show, but tech companies are as excited about trying their hand at smart glasses. With Samsung reportedly joining the race, the competition in the market is expected to get intense with more companies joining later.

"The reason is simple. The market potential for smart glass is huge. It will be used in trucks, cars and has a greater impact on related industries such as glass- and coatings-makers," an official at Samsung   Electronics told The Korea Times.

The report also mentions that Samsung registered a patent for wearable glasses in October 2013 and was working with its own display manufacturing arm, Samsung Display. The filing reveals that the functions of the so-called Galaxy Glass will be similar to that of Google Glass, allowing users to pair it with smartphones and take and make calls, listen to music, display notifications through a tiny eyepiece on a transparent or semi-transparent lens.

While the report builds a positive platform for the development of Galaxy Glass, some details about the unannounced eye-wear remain sketchy. The news website did not reveal the platform the Galaxy Glass will use; an open source software like Android, which powers most of its gadgets, or a closed software such as Samsung Tizen OS. The expected price range of the glass is also unknown at the moment.
