Hilary Duff confirmed on Friday that she and her husband of three years, retired NHL star Mike Comrie, have mutually decided to split up, but according to Us Weekly, the two spent quite some time in couple's therapy trying to work on their relationship.

"Hilary Duff and husband Mike Comrie have mutually decided to an amicable separation," Duff's rep said in a recent statement. "They remain best friends and will continue to be in each other's lives. They are dedicated to loving and parenting their amazing son, and ask for privacy at this time."

A source told Us Weekly that Duff felt Comrie "didn't put enough effort into the relationship," and while they tried counseling for 18 months, "recently he wasn't doing any of the things they'd worked on."

In 2012, Comrie was forced to retire from the Pittsburgh Penguins due to an injury, reportedly causing his ambition to "nosedive." Duff, 26, and Comrie, 33, ultimately decided they are "better as friends," as the source told the gossip magazine, as the spark is no longer there.

The actress and athlete share a 22-month-old son, Luca Cruz Comrie, whom they welcome into the world on March 2012. Currently Duff is working on her fifth studio album set to be released sometime this spring, her first in seven years.

While it is assumed Comrie and Duff will eventually divorce, they have not announced any plans yet.
