A wheelchair bound, New York woman who lost both her legs after a simple gynecological procedure gone wrong was awarded $62 million in damages Friday, the New York Daily News reported.

Stacey Galette, from Brooklyn, went to Winthrop University Hospital on Long Island in October 2009 for a laparoscopic operation, a procedure done in the abdominal area, to remove an ectopic pregnancy.

Doctors botched the procedure, leaving Galette in a coma for three weeks and both of her legs amputated. Galette, 34, sued, and a New York City jury awarded her $20 million for the pain she already endured, $38 million for the pain she will endure in the future, and $4 million to cover medical expenses, the Daily News reported.

"I'm just happy justice was served," Galette told the Daily News. "I'm not able to walk."

Galette, who now uses prosthetics legs, filed a malpractice lawsuit against the doctors who performed the procedure in 2010.

"They punctured her intestine," Galette's lawyer, Sanford Rubenstein, told NBC News in 2010, "causing an infection and blood poisoning, and gangrene set in...resulting in below-the-knee amputation in both legs."

Galette did not know about her amputation until she woke up from her coma.

"When I woke up, I was in ICU and I asked my family what I was doing here. They told me about my foot [which] got amputated. I was hurt," Galette told NBC News.

Galette, who used to live on Long Island, also has a 13-year-old daughter. She told NBC News she can't be a proper mother anymore.

"I'm not able to take care of my daughter, get her ready for school [or] take her to the bus stop like I used to," Galette said.

It took the jury three days to deliver the verdict after a 12-week trial. Winthrop Hospital said they would appeal the ruling, the Daily News reported.

"We got a lot of people praying with us for this day," Galette's father, Evan Romulus, told the Daily News. "In the end, God gave us victory."
