Frank Lampard will leave New York City FC at the end of this season following the expiration of his contract, according to the MLS Club.

The club announced the news today after the rumors reportedly picked up steam from the past few days.

The former Chelsea great signed for the New York FC in 2014, initially played a season in Manchester City and then came back. Having arrived at Yankee stadium in mid-2015, the Englishman scored 15 goals in 31 games, which is a decent return for the 38-year-old striker.

According to OneFootball, Lampard teased on Instagram about his announcement regarding the "next stage" of his career very soon, while also saying: " As my time at NYCFC comes to an end, I'd like to thank so many people for kindness and support they've shown over the last two years".

According to BBCFootball, in an interview with Gary Linekar, Lampard said he was keen into a coaching role, a statement which might stir a few rumors about his job speculation when his contract expires.

Lampard left Chelsea in 2014 as the club's leading goal-scorer with 211 goals.

NYCFC coach Patrick Viera also praised Frank Lampard and his willingness to work hard even in tough conditions. He also touched on Englishman's goal-scoring prowess from midfield which is a thing admired itself.

The French coach added saying," It is clear that Frank has embraced playing in this league for this club. I as a manager is grateful for his service in my first year here and I wish him the very best in whatever he chooses next to do".

However, Lampard started quite poorly at the MLS and was stated as "worst signing" of this season's league as injuries and his spell back at Manchester City hindered his involvement.

But he rediscovered his form the next year by scoring 12 goals in first 14 games, making the city celebrate "Frank Lampard Day" in September.

Lampard's previous game for the club was a defeat to Toronto in this season's Eastern Conference semi-finals.
