WhatsApp recently has rolled out two major updates 'Mentions' and GIF support, in messenger's iOS and Android apps.

'Mention' is a ingenious new feature in which you can tag someone in a post in a group chat. This works like any other social network mention such as Twitter, Instagram or Facebook.

Another update is of Animated GIFs that are now supported by both the mobile apps. The feature available in the beta versions right now. There is no dedicated button to add the GIF in the chat though for sending it, you have to use the image button, Huffington Post suggests.

This feature is actually does a little more than just supporting animations, In addition to sending GIFs stored on your phone, you can also search Giphy's on the massive library, or Tenor's which is available to search in some countries, to find out the animations that suits your conversations with.

The update also gives you the powerful GIF editor that will let you add captions, stickers and even drawings to your chosen animation. In addition to this, you can also trim the clips to the desired length for making it animated GIF.

The latest version of WhatsApp also will turn your videos that are 6 seconds or shorter into GIFs before sending them. To do this, simply select a clip from your camera roll and then tap the GIF toggle to convert it, reports TheNextWeb.

Some of these updated features are available to users testing the beta version of WhatsApp but now they're rolling out more widely.

Precisely in the update you can do following things:

  • Send and receive animated GIFs
  • You can make GIF of videos that are 6 seconds or shorter.
  • You can Send Live Photos as animated GIFs. Just 3D Touch any live photo from Attach - Photo/Video Library and choose "Select as GIF."
