Apple has reportedly been working on a larger display screen for the iPhone for quite some time as the trend in smartphone technology seems to be moving toward larger "phablet" designs. Now, new reports from the Chinese Publication, Huanquiu (via Yahoo!) indicate that the company is planning to debut these new larger-display iPhones sooner than many people thought.

iPhone phablets could be launched as a product that is separate from the regular iPhone family sometime in May. The new iPhone 6 will launch later this year and is expected in September. This would mean that phablets will be joining Apple's lineup of iPhones, iPods, iPads and iPad Minis in terms of the company's mobile device hardware.

The iPhone phablets will pack a display that is bigger than 5-inches and a 20 nanometer processor made by TSMC that is either going to be a new A7 processor or simply a revamped A7 CPU, the product unveiled with the iPhone 5S in late 2013. Everything will run on HKMG 28 nanometer process.

According to reports from South Korea's ET News, the iPhone 6 will arrive closer to September and will feature a slimmer profile than its predecessor, the iPhone 5S. The same story said that the price of the iPhone 5S will go down to about $100 in may, but there is no clear reason as to why that would happen at this time.

Again, it's worth noting that until Apple actually confirms anything, all of this information should be taken with a grain of salt. The company is usually pretty good at keeping tight lipped about its products right up until their unveiling, leaving that constant shadow of a doubt to loom over analysts and tech fan's heads all year.

Throwing its hat into the phablet arena would be a good move on Apple's part, especially if it wants to overtake competitors like the Samsung Galaxy Note series that has become so popular in recent months.
