Motorola has kicked off the New Year by slashing the price of its flagship Moto X smartphone. The off-contract Moto X 16GB smartphone is now available for $399 and lasts for good.

Motorola, a Google-owned company, has decided to extend a generous offer as people step in to a fresh start this New Year. The mobile maker has slashed the price of its flagship Moto X smartphone, now offering it for $399 without any contract. The new, low price offer is not just a temporary New Year discount, but is a permanent reduction.

Motorola SVP Rick Osterloh made the announcement Wednesday morning and explained how the Moto X was made to fulfill the vast customer demands in a smartphone. Moto X, launched in August, became the first smartphone to offer extreme levels of customization, with hundreds of color combinations for the back cover, front panel, and accent. Motorola also addressed the most common battery drainage problems in the smartphone. It lasts all day long and was also among the first to get an Android 4.4 KitKat upgrade.

Motorola's new pricing follows a special holiday discount in November for $349. The offer only lasted temporarily, but the attractive price made the Moto Maker site crash due to extreme demand and user traffic. The new price for the 4.7-inch Moto X is only $50 more than Google's KitKat flagship LG Nexus 5, which has become quite popular among budget-conscious shoppers.

As Osterloh mentions in the company's official blog, Motorola dropped the price of its Moto X after customers made it clear that they want "a new premium smartphone at a reasonable price without having to wait for a contract upgrade."

"Today several wireless carriers offer good month-to-month or prepaid service plans that cost much less than the contract plans that come with subsidized devices," Osterloh said in the company's blog. "Combine one of those plans with our new $399 everyday pricing and you could save hundreds of dollars over two years while keeping the freedom to change service providers when you feel like it. We can even help you finance your purchase so you pay monthly for your contract-free Moto X."

Now that the offer is here for good, you can design your own Moto X on any carrier anytime.
