Google has not finished rolling out Android 7.0 Nougat to Nexus 6 and Nexus 9 LTE and yet, Android 7.1 Nougat is already making rounds in the internet.

It is reported that Google will be launching its newest flagship smartphones, Pixel X and Pixel XL, on its October 4 event.

The news of Google Pixel X and Pixel XL, with codenames Google Sailfish and Marlin, have been subject of speculations for the past months. With some saying that the smartphones will be the most advanced in Google's smartphones line.

According to benchmarked specifications from Geekbench, Google's Pixel X and Pixel XL will run on Android 7.1 Nougat straight out of the box.

This is the first clue that Google may already have Android 7.1 Nougat in store for its flagship smartphones. However, whether Android 7.1 will be exclusive to Pixel X and Pixel XL is still yet to be certain of.

Google Pixel X and Pixel XL are also reported to drop the Nexus brand in favor of a more in-house vibe.

There is also a report saying that one developer uncovered references to Android 7.1 Nougat on the Google Play Developer Console.

Android 7.1 Nougat appears when you filter the Android version for app reviews and open the Crashes and ANRs page of an application.

The existence of Android 7.1 Nougat does not necessarily mean that it will be treated as an update to Android 7.0 Nougat and will be rolled out to all devices. As earlier mentioned, it can be exclusive to the yet to be announced, Pixel X and Pixel XL.

After all, Samsung, Huawei, Sony and other Android-running-smartphones are still currently working on their own tweaks to Android 7.0 Nougat. Although, these companies may have been working on Android 7.1 Nougat all along.

We can never be certain, really.

At this point, only Google knows when Android 7.1 Nougat will be officially announced and what smartphones will run on the latest OS.
