BlackBerry now has former Sybase CEO John Chen and the company is hoping that Chen can change the course of their dwindling business.

Chen has provided three key points in which he wants to focus on in order to bring in more profits for the company. Although details are sparse, Chen said that he wants to concentrate on BlackBerry’s QNX operating system, messaging, and secure enterprise services.

The company’s problems began when it failed to keep up with the touchscreen phone demand brought by Apple. BlackBerry is still in the mobile market; however, they are holding a very specific niche. Experts agree that the company’s best asset so far is their secure enterprise services. These services include secure messaging and device management for mobile phones.

To date, there are 80,000 companies who make use of Blackberry’s device management system. Furthermore, the Blackberry Enterprise Service 10 (BES 10) can be used not only in BlackBerry phones but also in Android phones and iPhones. According to the company’s quarterly report for 2013, more than 30,000 BES10 have been installed for both commercial and personal use.

Aside from the BES10, BlackBerry is also looking into the potential of the QNX operating system and its applications. As of now, the QNX OS is primarily used for cars as it is used by over 40 car manufacturing companies. There is so much room for improvement for this BlackBerry service and the main challenge is to find other applications of the QNX OS that the public will accept.

BlackBerry’s next moves to salvage their company are all risky, but they can also turn in a lot of profit when done properly. With Chen’s new leadership, BlackBerry is seen to be reducing risks by turning their attention from the mobile device business to the more viable industry of secure services and software development.
