"Game of Thrones" and "People v. O. J. Simpson" were among the programs that made it big in the Emmy Awards 2016 held last Sunday.  The HBO drama series has already bagged a total of 38 awards, while FX's anthology garnered its first since it debuted on February this year.

The award for the Best Drama Series went to the "Thrones" the second consecutive year with success in two other categories as well. With these, it has finally beaten "Fraiser", which won 37 Emmys for the past 12 years.

Some of the stars in the American crime series, which was based on the true-to-life trial of OJ Simpson in the 1990s, also brought home their first Emmys. Among them was Sara Paulson who was cited for being an outstanding lead actress in her portrayal of prosecutor Marcia Clark. Other winners were Courtney B. Vance and Sterling K. Brown.

The opening lines of the Emmy Awards 2016 host, Jimmy Kimmel, was interpreted as a prediction  of the triumph of the "Thrones" and "O.J." as he said, "If your show doesn't have a dragon or a white Bronco in it, go home."

Winning the title as outstanding actor for a drama series was Rami Malek for his role in "Mr. Robot", and Tatiana Maslany of "Orphan Black" as leading actress for the same category.

In a comedy series, "Veep "also received high honors for the second time. Its actress, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, got her fifth best actress Emmy award. The best comedy actor went to "Transparent's "Jeffrey Tambor who took the role of a transgender woman. Quite unexpectedly, it was Kate McKinnon, from "Saturday Night Live", who grabbed the best supporting actress for comedy from the seven-time winner Allison Janney.  Louie Anderson of "Baskets" was also a first-timer as he won the comedy best supporting award.

Indeed, the Emmys Award 2016 was marked with many firsts and a couple of big surprises.
