Tom Cruise's newest film, "American Made" (previously entitled "Mena"), has been in boiling hot water for quite some time now.

On September 11, 2015, during the filming of the movie, Holywood Stunt Pilot Alan D. Purwin and Student Pilot Carlos Berl died on a plane crash. The plane they were piloting crashed just 10 minutes after take-off on their way to Enrique Olaya Herrera Airport in Medellin. Tom Cruise was on the same route on a different aircraft minutes before the tragedy happened. Meanwhile, Jimmy Lee Garland survived the said plane crash.

A year after the incident, the family of one of the deceased, Carlos Berl, filed a formal wrongful death complaint in Los Angeles Superior Court against the production companies of the movie. The complaint accuses the defendants of sacrificing the safety of flight operations to save money from the production of the movie which resulted to the death of two production crews, specifically Student Pilot, Carlos Berl.

Those being sued are: Mena Prods., Cross Creek Pictures, Imagine Entertainment, Vendian Entertainment, Quadrant Pictures, Frederic North (Helicopter Pilot), Garland and S&S Aviation, Heliblack (Purwin's company), and Kathryn Purwin (Executor of Purwin's estate).

This was the second time the producers of the movie were sued. Just this April, Purwin's estate accused the production companies along with Berl's estate of unexpectedly directing Berl to board and pilot the crashed aircraft even though the latter was still inexperienced.

With the movie facing lawsuits now, it will not be a surprise if the movie will be delayed further.

"American Made", originally entitled Mena, is about the American Pilot Barry Seal. Barry Seal worked for well-known Colombian drug lord Pablo Escobar by transporting drugs into the US. He then became a spy for the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) and Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA).

"American Made" release date is September 2017.
