A Texas man fatally shot a 14-year-old boy by accident on Thursday night after not realizing the gun he took out was loaded, CBS News reported.

Several people were at a home in Fort Worth when the 24-year-old man took out a gun, who claims he did not know it was loaded. He accidentally shot the victim in the head, right above the left eye.

The unidentified victim was rushed to Peter Smith Hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

Though the shooter fled the house, he called authorities from a second location. After police located him, they took him into custody and began the investigation.

According to KSAX TV, the man and teenager were acquaintances but neither lived in the home where the shooting occurred.

Earlier this week, a man in Colorado made headlines for claiming to accidentally shoot and kill his 14-year-old stepdaughter after thinking she was an intruder.

"It has been determined that the victim's stepfather is the individual who shot the firearm, striking the victim who was a resident of the involved home," police wrote in a statement.

News of the alleged shooting accident came days after Claire Davis, victim of the Arapahoe High School shooting, died in the hospital where she was being treated it.

The shooting at Arapahoe expectantly added to the national debate over gun laws, with advocacy groups like Moms Demand Action publishing research on the connection between stronger gun laws in Colorado and lower crime rates and conservative newspapers like The Washington Times suggesting armed responses to shootings are the reason behind lower gun-related death and injury rates.
