In a recent leak, news about George RR Martin's "Winds of Winter" release date started doing the rounds. However, the author and publishers of the book quickly denied the speculations.

When Amazon France accidentally indicated a potential release date to be March 2017, the internet world was quick to notice and soon the rumors about the date leak started doing the rounds. While the hopeful fans were ecstatic about getting the first conclusive update in years, the news publications were quick to point out that the date was in fact a placeholder. They also mentioned for it to be a mistake. Since Martin has refused to provide any official information about the book release, it is safe to assume that the date on Amazon page is to be taken with a grain of salt.

Martin's US publishers cleared the air in a press release saying, "As his publisher, we support George RR Martin as he works hard to finish 'The Winds of Winter.' Any on-sale dates currently listed online for the novel are incorrect. Once we have a publication date for The Winds of Winter,' the world will know."

At the same time, his publishers is U.K., Harper Collins and Voyager Books, also clarified that

"nothing has been finalized regarding the publication or the date."

"A Dance of Dragons" was the last book in "A Song of Ice and Fire" series that was released in 2010, six years ago. Since then, Martin has made his fans wait impatiently for "The Winds of Winter." The popular author has already apologized to his fans several times for the delay.

To make up for Martin's slow writing, the popular adaptation of the book, "Game of Thrones," has followed a steady pace. Outpacing the novel, the show is now on to its second last and seventh season that is slated for Summer 2017 release on HBO.
