A man climbed the fence surrounding Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport and headed towards a plane around 5:30 p.m. on Christmas day, the Associated Press reported.

Authorities arrested Robert Edward Bump, 49, shortly after pilots realized he was closing in on the aircraft. Police say he jumped the fence near Terminal 3.

"Bump struck the engine of the aircraft with his hands and was walking toward the terminal when he was quickly apprehended by officers," Officer James Holmes said.

No injuries occurred during the incident and police said the Southwest Airlines passengers were never in danger. Officials believe Bump may have been under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

"The Captain and First Officer did exactly what they needed to do when they saw the person approaching the aircraft by shutting down the engines and stopping the aircraft on the taxiway," Southwest Airlines told ABC15.

He was booked in jail for entering a restricted area at an airport. It is unclear whether Bump got a lawyer or is still in police custody.
