Tesla Motor Inc. announced the use of a larger and upgraded battery pack on the high-end versions of all-electric sedan Model S and Model X SUVs to boost their driving range and acceleration.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk said the larger upgraded 100 kWh battery will be offered on the performance versions of the Model S and X called the P100D, according to a Reuters report.

When used on the Model S P100D, the all-electric sedan will be able to accelerate from 0-60 miles per hour in 2.5 seconds while the Model X P100D sport utility vehicle is expected to do the same in 2.9 seconds, the report added.

On its official website, Tesla said that the P100D versions of the Model S and X with the new 100 kWh battery are expected to provide longer driving range.

The company said the Model S P100D posted a 315-mile EPA range and the Model X P100D comes with a decent 289-mile EPA range on a single charge.

Aside from the new battery, the high-end versions of the Model S and X will come with the Ludicrous mode, a setting that allows the vehicles to provide better acceleration performance through electronics.

Given the said improvements, the P100D version of the Model S according to a CNBC news article will have a starting price of $134,500 and the price of Model X P100D will start at $135,500. The same article also mentioned that a battery upgrade will be available to owners of P90D Ludicrous at $20,000 while those who have just placed their order can opt for it at an added cost of $10,000.

Due to the battery upgrade, the new high-grade versions of the Model S and X can now be considered as the third fastest vehicles with the Ferrari LaFerrari and the Porsche 918 Spyder taking the first two spots. However, Elong Musk was quick to point out that the Porsche and Ferrari cars are two-seater million-dollar cars that buyers can no longer purchase in brand-new versions. Thus, Musk's statement is hinting that the Model S is currently the fastest-accelerating car in production.
