Ghostbusters remake cast member, Leslie Jones announced on Twitter that she is leaving the social networking site after suffering from immense racist backlash after the movie's successful release.

"I leave Twitter tonight with tears and a very sad heart. All this cause I did a movie. You can hate the movie but the s*** I got today...wrong."

"I'm not stupid to not know racism exists. And I know it will probably live on way after me. But we have to make people take responsibility," she wrote on her page.

Jones' racial spat is said to have sprung from fans' frustration of making Paul Feig's Ghostbuster reboot cast, an all-female group, an act said to have 'ruined the childhoods' of a lot of people.

Some of the recorded abuse she received last week include blatant statements calling her 'ape,' evil' and 'fucking scary' among others. Some trolls went on farther posting comments like "even got a pic with semen on my face."

Some supporters advised her to ignore the messages but she rejected the advice with her asserting her right to fight back and not 'stooping' to their level.

"And for all the "don't stoop to their level people" it's way past that. So please have a seat. Don't tell me how to react," she once wrote.

She also urged Twitter to 'implement stronger guidelines' in stopping hate speech online further suggesting that perpetrators should face real crime charges and not just their suspension of their Twitter accounts.

A Twitter spokesperson is said to have addressed the matter saying they have taken action and have promised to improve their system to prevent such racist abuse.

"We realise we still have a lot of work in front of us before Twitter is where it should be on how we handle these issues."

Following the heated racial backlash against Leslie Jones, sympathizers also invented the  #LoveForLeslieJ, as a way to dissolve the argument.

Meanwhile, Rory Bruer, president of worldwide distribution of Sony Students, has told the media on Sunday that yes, a Ghostbusters sequel is possible in the future.

The 'Ghostbusters' world is alive and well. I expect 'Ghostbusters' to become an important brand and franchise," he said.

Ghostbusters reboot boosts of gathering a $46 million sales in its opening week. Its main cast include stars like Melissa McCarthy, Leslie Jones, Kristen Wiig and Kate McKinnon.
