Japanese electronics and entertainment giant Sony is reportedly set to present 'The Last of Us' sequel at the Electronic Entertainment Expo or E3 2016 event in Los Angeles, California next week.

Per Crossmap report, Sony will also release a gameplay trailer for the next iteration of the game which is expected to thrill avid fans who are anticipating new concept arts and clips.

Telegraph also noted that 'The Last of Us 2' is one of E3's most anticipated games. The post-apocalyptic action drama will bring gamers to a new emotional gameplay experience with another set of characters and places to explore. If rumors prove accurate, the next title could either be a sequel or a prequel to the current title and will not follow the Ellie and Joel story line.

'The Last of Us 2' rumors came about after the discovery of an Easter egg in 'Uncharted 4' showed 'The Last of Us: American Daughters' poster generating speculations that the pregnant woman in the picture wearing a gas mask while holding a gun could either be Ellie's mother or pregnant Ellie herself.

In addition to the speculations mentioned above, Christian Today mentioned that 'The Last of Us 2' will be based on a storyline taking place years after the events in the original title. As the report said, Ellie will still play a very important role in the development of the story. The sequel will pick up where the game's 'infamous' finale left off. Ellie's immunity from the virus will reportedly drive her journey in finding a cure.

Meanwhile, game developer Naughty Dog remains ambiguously silent on the said sequel. So far, no official details regarding the said game title has come out.

"Right now I'd say it's 50/50. It's kind of like how we approached Left Behind. Can we tell people a story that's really worth telling, and that's not repeating itself? And if we can't, where can we get inspired--what is something that's really going to challenge us, and push storytelling in this medium forward?" director Neil Druckmann as quoted by Game Spot.
