We know that Rian Johnson will be directing "Star Wars: Episode VIII," but what we didn't know was how involved "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" director J.J. Abrams would be as a producer. As it turns out, Abrams is pretty involved in the film.

Earlier this week, it was announced that UK comedian Ade Edmondson has secure a mystery role in "Star Wars: Episode VII." Now we've found out that Abrams was the one who cast him. Pretty cool, no?

"In one of the more unexpected casting moves of the day, reports suggest that actor and comedian Ade Edmondson has secured a role in Star Wars Episode VIII," The Independent reports.

"The star of Nineties sitcom Bottom will appear in a 'top secret' role," according to The Sun.

"'Ade is one of the most-loved comedy stars in the UK,' stated a source. 'But even he would admit that Star Wars is a surprise move for him.'"

Abrams deserves a lot of credit for launching the new trilogy of "Star Wars" films, introducing the galaxy far, far away to a new generation and for righting the wrongs of the much-maligned prequel trilogy. Given all that, it's nice to know that he's had some sort of role in the development of "Episode VIII."

"Journeying to a galaxy far, far away would be a huge coup for Edmonson; his most recent media appearances have largely been restricted to reality shows such as The Great Sport Relief Bake Off and Celebrity Masterchef - he won both - but a role in BBC's War and Peace saw him return to his acting roots."

It's unknown what kind of role Edmondson will be playing. It's also unknown how large of a role it will be. Fans became very excited when Abrams cast members of "The Raid" crew in "The Force Awakens," only for their screen time to total less than two minutes. Will the same apply to Edmondson? We'll have to wait to find out.

"Star Wars: Episode VIII" will arrive on Dec. 17, 2017.
