Georgia police arrested a woman who prompted a standoff with authorities when she took her newborn grandchild hostage after a domestic dispute early this morning.

The grandmother, who is believed to be in her 50s, was taken into custody after the incident. Reports indicate that her identity will be released after she is booked into the Gwinnett County Jail and a formal statement about the incident is made.

Police reported that the incident occurred at a residence inside the Highland Corners apartment complex on Noble Forest Drive in Peachtree Corners, prompted by a domestic argument between the grandmother and the baby's father. At some point during the confrontation, the woman grabbed hold of the 4-week-old baby while holding a gun and walked outside and fired a gunshot.

At 3 a.m., she returned to the apartment and holed herself and the baby up inside the apartment, which led police to dispatch a SWAT team to the scene an hour later. Upon their arrival, the authorities entered the apartment and managed to defuse the situation and separate the woman from her grandchild.

Gwinnet County Police Cpl. Michele Pihera made the news official when she revealed that the standoff between the SWAT team and the grandmother was resolved without incident. Her statement left out several key pieces of information such as what prompted the argument and the location of the infant's parents as the situation unfolded.

We already know the father was involved in the incident since the argument between him and the grandmother is what caused the standoff to occur in the first place. However, his whereabouts or status after the grandmother fired the shot remains unclear. Based on a press release and associated reports, he - as well as everyone else - seems to be okay.

Similarly, it's unclear what role the mother had in all of this. In any case, she is reportedly fine and the baby was returned to her custody after the child was checked out.
