The mother of a newborn baby whose remains were found at a recycling facility in New York was arrested on Tuesday in alleged connection with the child's death.
23-year-old Maria Oliva Guaman-Guaman was taken into police custody this week, according to Spring Valley chief of police Paul Modica.
Guaman-Guaman is being charged with second-degree murder, the Associated Press reported.
The chief said that the New York suburban mother reportedly strangled the baby boy, then left his body in a Spring Valley recycling container outside of a deli.
City workers took the bin to Brookfield Recycling, a facility in Elmsford, located 25 miles north of New York City. The infant's remains were found at the site on Nov. 12.
The baby, which was kept in a plastic bag, still had its umbilical cord attached, the New York Daily News reported.
Investigators working on the case have named the newborn boy "Baby Angel."
Guaman-Guaman, who worked at a dog food factory in the city of Hillburn, has a 2-year-old daughter who is currently being held by child protective services officials.
The 23-year-old Ecuador native was said to be living in the United States illegally.
