Twitter announced Tuesday that its web and mobile users will be able to send and view photos through the social network's direct messages (DM).

Twitter is adding a slew of new features with the highlight being the ability to share photos using the direct messages (DM) feature on the social network. Sharing photos has become a new trend among the young generation who like to let the world know about their whereabouts.

If you recall an incident from September last year of Alison Pill's accidental leak of her topless picture on Twitter or even the most-highlighted incident of Anthony Weiner in 2011, then we may rightfully emphasize the latest feature can save a lot of unwanted attention. Although "The Newsroom" actress and the Congressman realized the error and quickly deleted the photos, but on a social network like Twitter, every second matters.

Twitter revealed in a company's blog post Tuesday that the web and mobile version of the microblogging service was being updated. Users will not only be able to send messages through DM on Twitter but also send photos to their followers. This is just one of many features that are being added to the service in its latest update. The photo-sharing option puts Twitter in a fiercely competitive market of photo-sharing apps such as Snapchat, Whatsapp and others.

Twitter has also updated the navigation system for viewing timeline activities. Users can simply swipe from "Home" timeline to "Discover" timeline "to find trends, popular Tweets and new accounts tailored for you," and also swipe to "Activity" timeline "to see Tweets and accounts that are popular among people you follow," Twitter explained.

Twitter for mobile has also undergone a notable change. Apple iPhone and iPad users get a new in-app notification center to alert users if a new DM has arrived, or if anyone retweeted and replied to your tweet. The Android users get an option to receive mobile notifications by tapping the star on their profile.

The updated version of Twitter is available for download on iTunes and Google Play Store for free. If you already have the app on your smartphones then check for the latest update.
