A Brooklyn teen will go to trial on a shoplifting charge, after she was found in a New York City lingerie store carrying a dead fetus around in a bag.

A judge scheduled 17-year-old Tiona Rodriguez of Crown Heights to go to trial on Jan. 23 for a misdemeanor theft.

Rodriguez was in the Herald Square Victoria's Secret with a friend when she was stopped by a security guard who suspected she'd been shoplifting, CBS New York reported.

When he checked Rodriguez' belongings, he found a dead fetus in the shopping bag.

Medical experts are still unsure whether the baby was delivered still-born and what could have caused the death.

Rodriguez reportedly told law enforcement officials that she'd been carrying the fetus since she'd given birth the previous day and wasn't sure what to do. The teen's defense team did not disclose to CBS how or why the fetus was put in the shopping bag.

The 17-year-old is only on trial for attempting to steal a pair of $44.50 skinny jeans, the New York Daily News reported. There was no mention of potential charges concerning the dead fetus during the initial proceedings.

Rodriguez insisted on Tuesday that she was innocent of shoplifting in the case, while the friend who was with her at the time and also received shoplifting charges pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct. She must spend two days doing community service for the crime.
