Zombies will be invading Universal Studios Hollywood this summer. The theme park will open a permanent attraction for "The Walking Dead," incorporating elements from the popular AMC series and the comic books.

"The Walking Dead" attraction is scheduled to open in summer 2016. Chris Hardwick announced the new installment on Sunday night's episode of "Talking Dead."

"It's going to be located within a custom built structure that will immerse guests within the world of 'The Walking Dead,'" Hardwick explained, adding the attraction will be the "most intense, realistic 'Walking Dead' experience ever."

Executive producer Greg Nicotero will help create the attraction with the show's production team. It will feature a mix of state-of the-art special effects and animatronics as well as live performers. It will be located close to the park entrance on the new Universal Blvd.

"The Walking Dead" has already had a presence at Universal Studios Hollywood and Orlando as part of the parks' Halloween Horror Nights. Hollywood's 2015 event featured "The Walking Dead: Wolves Not Far," which took visitors through an elaborate maze retracing the most iconic moments from season 5.

Comic-cons across the country also gave fans the chance to escape the zombie apocalypse in an intense obstacle course. They would have to try and survive or become part of the infected.

"The Walking Dead" attraction will join The Wizarding World of Harry Potter, which will open at Universal Studios Hollywood on April 7. Visitors can walk the halls of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, explore the shops in Hogsmeade or catch a glimpse of Buckbeak the hippogriff on "Flight of the Hippogriff."

"The Wizarding World of Harry Potter" in Hollywood follows the success of the attraction in Orlando, which also features a new world that takes visitors to Diagon Alley.

Other attractions at Universal Studios Hollywood include the rides "Fast & Furious Supercharged," "Despicable Me Minion Mayhem" and "Transformers: The Ride-3D" as well as the Universal studio backlot tour in the world's largest working movie studio.

"The Walking Dead" is currently in the middle of its sixth season and last year spawned the spinoff series "Fear the Walking Dead." The original series airs on Sunday nights at 9 p.m. on AMC.
