Sony has scored big on its PS4 launch in UK, becoming the nation's fastest selling gaming console with over 250,000 units sold in the first 48 hours of launch.

Sony had a remarkable start for its PS4 gaming console, with more than 1 million units sold in just 24 hours of launch in the U.S. and Canada on Nov. 15. The icing on the cake is that the success of PS4 in the U.K. has also been exceptionally great. Although Sony has to officially confirm it, retail sources have verified that Sony sold more than 250,000 PS4 units in the first 48 hours of availability in the U.K.

Sony launched the PlayStation 4 in Europe November 29, a week after Microsoft announced the multi-country launch of its Xbox One. Despite the late entry, Sony managed to score big compared to its competitor's sales report. Xbox One sold about 150,000 units in the first 48 hours in the U.K., which is less than what it was able to push in the U.S. and Canada (1 million units in 24 hours).

The PS4 has not only taken the lead from its competing console, but has also set a new record of being the U.K.'s fastest selling gaming console ever. That said, Sony breaks its own record of selling 185,000 PSP units when it was launched in the U.K. in 2005.

Both the gaming consoles are doing remarkably great despite the tough competition. The fast moving consoles have also resulted in a great demand for new games. According to the numbers published by Chart Track, 'Call of Duty: Ghosts' was last week's best-selling game in the UK, 'FIFA 14' and 'Battlefield 4' taking the second and the third spot, respectively.

According to trade site MCV, PS4 likely generated about £87 million ($142 million) in sales during the opening weekend. With the current trend, it is likely that both PS4 and Xbox One will generate more revenue in the coming weeks.
